"When you hold it in your hand, the washi paper is so thin it's almost translucent." The thickness is a mere 0.03mm. We received a consultation from a customer who was struggling with persistent wrinkles on a production line handling this incredibly delicate material.Finding the right expander roll for thin film is highly critical.
In the front lines of manufacturing, "wrinkles" and "slack" are critical issues directly linked to yield rates. Especially in roll-to-roll continuous production lines, a single wrinkle can lead to massive material loss.
The Barrier to Wrinkle Removal for 0.03mm Ultra-Thin Paper
The Physical Limit: Standard Rolls Simply Won't Rotate The customer had already installed a conventional expander roll (passive/follower type) from another manufacturer. However, with a substrate as thin as 0.03mm, the tension (pulling force) of the sheet itself is extremely weak.
As a result, the sheet lacked the force required to rotate the roll. This led to a difficult physical dilemma: not only were the wrinkles not being removed, but the stationary roll was putting unnecessary stress and friction on the delicate paper.
The Solution: Two Proprietary Technologies from Osaka Senshoku Machinery
To solve this highly sensitive challenge, Osaka Senshoku Machinery Co., Ltd. combined two of our core technical strengths.
1. Achieving "Ultra-Low Torque" that Rotates with a Single Finger First, we implemented our OSMT Expander Roll. The defining feature of this roll is its astonishing "rotational lightness." To put it simply, it rotates smoothly even with a minute amount of force—comparable to the output of a tiny toy motor. This ensured the roll followed the 0.03mm ultra-thin paper perfectly without imposing any burden on the material.
2. [Japan's Premier] Precision Rubber Grinding While Curved Next, we utilized our specialized technology of "grinding the rubber surface while the expander roll is in its curved state"—a capability offered by very few companies even in Japan.
To prevent slipping or tearing when conveying any sheet-like product, adjusting the "grip strength" according to the material is essential. Our unique grinding technology allowed us to optimize the grip for the delicate washi paper at a micron level, achieving reliable wrinkle removal.
From Washi to Next-Generation Laminated Films: Expanding Yield Improvement
Supporting the Demanding Production of Perovskite Solar Cells This technology—ensuring reliable wrinkle removal without stressing ultra-thin materials—is not limited to washi paper.
It is proving to be immensely powerful in the manufacturing processes of cutting-edge laminated films, such as Perovskite Solar Cells, which are currently being developed worldwide. Wrinkles or misalignments in the ultra-thin layers of next-generation energy devices directly impact both quality and yield.
At Osaka Senshoku Machinery Co., Ltd., we support the stable operation of production floors by addressing severe web handling challenges that off-the-shelf products cannot solve, using our overwhelming dedication to precision and proprietary adjustment technologies.
